October 13, 2017

District News:
  • The next regular Board of Education meeting will be on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 6:30 pm in the Ridgway library.  Click HERE to see the agenda.
Magowan School News:
  • The staff and students are off to a great start at Magowan School.  School wide expectations were taught and practiced the first week of school.  We celebrated being back together with the Parade To Success on Friday, September 15th.
  • Teachers and support staff helped students adjust and settle into classroom/school routines.  It’s always amazing to see how fast things get back to “normal!”
  • We have started R & R time while bus students wait for their bus at the end of the day.  R & R stands for READ & RELAX!  All bus students are to keep at least one book to read in their backpack.  Third and Fourth, (and some second) grade students should have a chapter book that they are reading for pleasure.  This book should go back and forth from home to school.  Younger students should have a few books to choose from.  When students come into the waiting room, they get in their bus line.  They sit down, even lay down if they want!  Students are required to spread apart so there is no physical contact.  Once settled, the waiting time is spent reading independently.  Support staff in the room monitors students and keeps things quiet so the children can concentrate.  Most students have, or will have, a reading log to maintain.  The reading completed during R & R counts toward nightly reading requirements.  In addition to reducing negative behaviors at the end of the day, students will have an opportunity for some scheduled quiet reading time each day.
  • Magowan School will celebrate the Week Of Respect October 2nd - 5th.
  • Fall picture days are set for October 18th and 19th.  Pre K, K and 1st on the 18th with 2nd, 3rd and 4th on the 19th.
  • School attendance is very important for any child to succeed.  Simply stated, children need to be in school in order to learn from school!  Of course children get sick from time to time.  A medical note from a Doctor will turn an unexcused absence into an excused absence.  All other absences are considered unexcused.  If/when a student reaches 10 unexcused absences, the family will develop an action plan for improvement with the school Social Worker, Counselor, Nurse, Teacher and Principal.  If there is no improvement and the child reaches 15 unexcused absences, legal action will be taken.  We care about your child and want to do everything we can to help him/her succeed in school.
Ridgway School News:

National Geographic Comes to Edgewater Park!
Last year, our Science Committee of teachers representing K-4 came together to discuss goals for implementing the Next Generation of Science Standards in New Jersey.  The committee decided that  the philosophy of the National Geographic Science Program was the way to go for our students.  The National Geographic Society’s philosophy is to educate and inspire people to care about the planet.  They do this through exploration and compelling visuals from Nat Geo’s amazing photographers.  The  resources offer great storytelling, and a real connection to various cultures which appear throughout the program.  All students will have a unit in Earth, Life, and Physical Science in grades K-4.  Each unit features:  hands-on investigations and connections to the real world.  The program gives students an opportunity to “Think Like an Engineer” and “Think Like a Scientist.”  Click HERE to learn more and see the program in action!
